Football started in ancient Greece, but its the late nineteenth century, and Walter Camp took to
refereeing Yale all-star games. He made a list of rules that determined how football should be
played — penalties for fouls, in particular. And when he published them nationally in 1906, the
standardization history of American football had begun.
